WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SPOKE TO SOMEONE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH AND RECEIVED THE PERSONAL ATTENTION YOU DESERVE?
I earned my bachelor's degree in Nutritional Science from Texas A&M University in the US. Throughout my time at university I worked in the on-campus gym teaching group exercise classes and training individuals in the weight room because I love helping others discover how good it feels to move. For nutrition, I was keenly interested in public health and was determined to make a difference in the community by working with NGO's. I interned at Meals on Wheels under the dietician and at the government clinic-WIC-Women, Infants, and Children. It was while working at these institutions, both wonderful in their rites, that I realized most people didn't want to learn, they just wanted to be told what to do. They wanted to walk in the door, be given a meal plan that fixes all their problems, and then walk right out. I spent this time in my early 20's doling out advice to hundreds of individuals without asking their opinions and beliefs surrounding food, or learning about their lives.
In 2010, I left those jobs and my home in Texas to explore the world. I was hit in the face with reality when volunteering in the country of Georgia. I was working with Abkhazian refugees from the 2008 war with Russia. I moved there full of ego to be dealt a blow. I tried to explain to teenage girls and young women about how to balance their diets, when their main concerns stemmed from overall healthy and safety, as well as concerns most teens have relating to body image, skin care, and sexual health. Our sessions evolved into so much more than I ever expected. We covered a wide range of topics, mostly from ideas that the participants had.
This was my first lesson that I was approaching clients all wrong. I was doling out advice and meal plans instead of educating those interested so they could learn and grow.
In 2012 I furthered my study of nutrition through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition where I studied over 100 dietary theories from some of the top leaders in the wellness world. When I moved to Hong Kong and began my business as a health coach there, I revolutionized my approach. I took on the role of an adviser and educator which allowed clients to drive themselves to better health. It was through this method that all of my clients found long-lasting success.
Through bi-monthly sessions filled with individually-relevant nutrition counselling, information handouts, books, recipes, encouragement, support, and love, my clients learn how to create the best version of themselves and live their best lives!
